Humpback Whale Expert: Animal Was Likely Foraging
A humpback whale breached the surface of the water off the coast of New Hampshire on Tuesday, capsizing a small boat and sending two people overboard. Dramatic video captured the incident, which occurred near Portsmouth at around 11:30 a.m.
The video shows the whale lunging out of the water and striking the boat, which was carrying three people. The impact caused the boat to flip over, throwing the occupants into the water. Two of the people were able to swim back to the boat, while the third was rescued by a nearby vessel.
No one was seriously injured in the incident. However, one of the victims was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Experts say the whale was likely foraging for food when it breached the surface. Humpback whales are known to feed on small fish and krill, which they catch by lunging out of the water with their mouths open.
The incident is a reminder of the importance of being aware of your surroundings when boating in areas where whales are known to be present.
