Aston Villa legend Gary Shaw dies aged 63

Former England striker Gary Shaw has died at the age of 63 following a short illness, Aston Villa have announced.

Shaw, who played for Villa between 1977 and 1987, was a key member of the side that won the European Cup in 1982. He also won two League Cups with the club and scored 132 goals in 382 appearances.

Shaw made his England debut in 1980 and won 11 caps, scoring three goals. He also had spells with West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield Wednesday, Luton Town and Walsall.

In a statement, Aston Villa said: "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our former player, Gary Shaw, who passed away peacefully in his sleep last night following a short illness.

"Gary was a wonderful player and a true gentleman. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him."

Shaw's former teammate, Gordon Cowans, said: "Gary was a great player. He was a goalscorer, a creator and a real team player.

"He was a big part of the success we had at Villa in the early 1980s. He was a great friend and I will miss him dearly."

Tributes have also been paid by former England manager Bobby Robson and ex-Villa manager Ron Atkinson.

Robson said: "Gary Shaw was a very talented player. He was a great goalscorer and he had a great touch.

"He was a good lad and I was very saddened to hear of his passing."

Atkinson said: "Gary Shaw was a great player. He was a natural goalscorer and he was a great asset to any team.

"He was a pleasure to manage and I am very saddened to hear of his passing."
